fiesta roll

When Ford Motor Company prepared the 2010 North American roll-out of the Fiesta, its initial marketing push was solely through social media. Ford supplied 100 people with a Fiesta to drive for six months. They were the right 100 people. They were digital influencers (bloggers, podcasters, YouTube celebrities, and automotive journalists) who produced tweets, videos, podcasts, posts, and articles relating to the Fiesta.

Fiesta interior

A single Web page was made aggregating all this data where folks could watch the test drive unfold in real time. Ford did not edit, script or delete any of the information. The YouTube videos got 7 million views. There were 40 million tweets that contained the campaign's name ("Fiesta Movement"). 130,000 people registered online to receive more information when the Fiesta went to dealers. 83 percent of those people had not owned a Ford. U.S. brand awareness went from practically zero to 58 percent! Talk about "buzz" creation.

All that "buzz" wasn't mere chatter. Ford converted 10 times more pre-launch purchase reservations into actual orders than it did for previous model rollouts. People got to witness people enjoying the benefits of the Fiesta.

I know this event is not new. I decided to create a post on it since "consumer-driven" brand information is so popular these days. In this case, the 100 people were practically responsible for creating the Fiesta brand. Certainly an excellent example to talk about when thinking of brand engagement.

Information for this post came from the January/February 2011 edition of CFO magazine.

power moving content

With so much data out there what have you done to maximize your potential in gathering the data and using it? Do you have a plan? Have you thought of what you're missing? Can "Big Data" deliver performance for me?

We are consuming the content like never before. That's good! But are we putting it to use? What about my brand? How can it benefit?

Produce content for your brand.  Put that content content on Social Media. There! But that's just the beginning of the process. Connect with people in the industry. That's a good place to start. Build your list of influencers. Start with Appinions to identify influencers. This also measures your impact.

Mark Schaefer presented these helpful parameters for standing out in the crowd:

  1. Relevant
  2. Interesting
  3. Timely
  4. Entertaining

RITE

"Power comes from content that moves."

Get a handle on the content that engages readers for brands. Entertaining your audience can't be overlooked. Look for content that includes RITE as well. Keywords are key! Use them to drive other industry content to you.

it roi: 3 metrics

How do you know whether a tech investment is worth making? There are 3 items to consider in making this decision:

  1. Net present value
  2. Internal rate of return
  3. Time to payback
These are all measurement methods you must understand. Many IT leaders lack the financial sophistication to precisely present the information CFOs and CEOs seek. Oftentimes financial metrics won't work for most IT projects. A challenge to say the least. Technology initiatives don't have a direct measurable effect on the bottom line. Examples are:

  • Social Media
  • CRM
  • Knowledge management
These have financial benefits, but they are indirect. Projecting ROI of these items is frustrating but IT projects need the support of ROI reasoning.

Financial skills are considered a plus. Finance needs to be at the core of IT strategy. Establish project management to do cost-benefit analyses and other ROI calculations. Create templates for ROI calculations. Cost-benefit analysis compares a project cost to its anticipated financial benefits. The 3 core metrics are used in this analysis. They were mentioned previously and here are definitions.

Time to payback measures how long a project will take to pay for itself.

Internal rate of return compares a project's anticipated benefits with what the company could have earned on the funds used by simply investing them.

Net present value determines how many future dollars are needed for an investment to pay for itself in today's dollars.

These 3 metrics are useful and need to be integrated. Be genuine. Keep in mind the importance of ROI when projects don't go according to plan. Think through the possibilities. Know your level of spending. Prepare ROI so common financial pitfalls can be avoided. Use your available data and perform the analysis. This suggests if your financial resources give a project the go-ahead.

social media reach

Your social meida footprint: fans/followers. Fans are a "reach" which translates into the number of people you can reach when all your posts are seen by all your fans. You target along their extended networks.

Networks are fast-paced. The reach is expected to go down! Not all your followers see your updates. Metrics from different networks will give you the data you need to see who you are reaching.

Metrics to consider:

Organic impressions [Facebook impressions]
Google+ Followers [Potential Reach on Google+]
Twitter Followers [Potential Reach on Twitter]
Twitter Reach [ Via Twitter Analytics]

This way you can find your brand reach and make meaning from Big Data.
Marketing strategies should be measured. Measuring social media is trciky, with no one particular way of doing it. Consider that. Consider to create your own system.

Concentrate on what matters.

    content marketing: 2014

One item: spend money on blogging. Product identity can be helped by blogging.
5 Content Marketing Trends & Predictions for 2014

Use social media to increase customer engagement and interaction.

    the cordial exchange

The customer influence has been around for as long as there have been customers. The evolution of the customer exchange has progressed at a rapid rate. That could very well be the understatement of the century! I know that. Social media has elevated the entire customer experience. It has elevated the merchants experience too. The notion that brands can get by with unresponsive service is gone.

Social media has enabled marketers to "take back" their brands and put into motion the criteria in understanding and reaching out to their customers. One important item is achieve this is social infrastructure. Through your social infrastructure the social exchange can develop.

Patrick Salyer, CEO of Gigya, wrote a guest post for forbes.com, addressing this topic.

Social does not mean marketers have to give up control.

Brigham Young University has advanced their sports teams social presence in a new and innovative way that allows fans to log in to grow the fan network. One visualization shows the fan/user network from around the world.

    social media metrics

The goal of the social media effort is drive traffic back to your website. We want to convert vists into leads and leads into customers. Measure the number of click throughs from each social media source. Market perception is measured by brand sentiment mentions on social media. Be sure to track the mentions.

The mobility of content of online communities is measured by the times content is shared.
    Audience tracking includes:

    • Facebook post likes and shares
    • Tweets directly from content
    • Retweets
    • YouTube likes, shares, and embeds
    • Pinterest repins
    • LinkedIn post likes and shares
The online community measurement is important because it shows brand reach and awareness.

Remember the 4 social media metrics:

    • Increase in community membership
    • Content mobility and engagement
    • Market perception
    • Social conversions
Concentrate on reaching the correct audience.

    big data and content

Big data has impacted virtually everything when it comes to content. Remember that Big Data is an umbrella term used by practically everyone who uses it. Big Data is easy to define if used from a purely technical standpoint. Whether we agree on the definition of Big Data or not isn't really important. What needs to be focused on is the use of Big Data.

The bond between Big Data and content is growing.... and growing stronger. The explosion of data needs to be turned into information and content. As we find growth in Big Data, we soon realize that we are contributing to Big Data! How's that for results?

Should we take a step back and analyze this perspective? Most likely. What most want is to turn Big Data into revenue. Easier said than done. We need to focus on the benefits and less on technology. Translated: create value.

Use Big Data to fulfill business goals. This includes marketing. Your goal: turn the raw data into actionable information. Pay attention to how Big Data is used in content management, social business, and marketing.

    data collecting

With the help of social networks, potential customers are providing valuable information marketers can use to attract business. Customer retention is also helped with this method. Campaigns can be developed that better align with the consumers' interests.

    Resource article from business2community.com

Businesses need to communicate with consumers on how their information will be used.

"Social login enables users to create accounts and sign in to websites and mobile apps using their existing social profiles, which facilitates an easier registration and login process while giving businesses an opportunity to capture permission-based social data on their customers."

    From the venturebeat.com article

The post asks if Pinterest and Google will take on Facebook dominance.

Superheroes In Business Suits: Why The World Needs Social Intrapreneurs

When inside businesses are driving change from within the corporate structure, the change can be enormous. So we have to find ways to empower more people to identify as intrapreneurs.

We live in an era of superhuman challenges. Climate change, extreme poverty, and global hunger are a few of the many problems that have no easy fix, and yet they must be solved. In this world, we need full-time superheroes, not just mythical men and women who moonlight in tights and capes.

We need social intrapreneurs--people who works within companies to align economic and social goals. They are both Clark Kent and Superman at once, swooping in wearing shirt and tie or blouse. They can work in finance or supply chain, operations or marketing, or as the head of a business unit.
